I should have my new home computer by this Friday!!
I am SO excited!
Please note: the last time I bought a new computer was in October of 2000. Yep. That’s right. 2000. That’s, like, 162 in computer years. My old computer still runs on Windows 98.
This new one will be just like the new one I have at work – which is how I got it, thank you, IT Guy!! – except it will have 4 GB of RAM instead of 3GB of RAM. I’ve already given them my check to pay for it, so when it arrives this Friday, I will be able to take it home.
The fun part will be installation – I have saved my birthday and Christmas money this year to buy this at Crate and Barrel, and I will need it for my new computer because I am going to bring it out of the dark ages, so to speak, and install it in my living room.
The point of this is to a) free up more of my attention at work for actual work so that I don’t have to spend 14 hours a day here, and b) to be able to do more stuff at home than I can currently do with dial up (yes, I said “dial-up”) and my old software. When I bought the old machine, I got it with the newest version of WordPerfect because that was what my old office used.
This new one uses Microsoft (which my youngest brother identified for me as “the Death Star” – cue Star Wars Darth Vadar music), but it will be compatible so that even if I do work longer hours to meet my billable/dollar quota for this year, I should be able to do some of it from home, so that my poor sweet puppy doesn’t feel like an orphan.
The only hiccup so far is the phone jack issue. I know! Who knew? But, the people who owned my condo before me had 4 phone jacks installed: 1 in each bedroom upstairs, 1 in the kitchen, and 1 in the basement. In order to use my computer in my living room, I have to install a jack for my high-speed whatever-it-is where I plan to use the computer.
The phone company graciously offered to install one for me – for $138.99! Since I refuse to pay $139 for a hole in the wall, I thanked them very much and decided I would go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and get one myself. I am not an idiot – I can follow a recipe well enough to cook, so I should be able to follow directions well enough to install a jack.
That and a massive carpet cleaning are the big agenda items for this weekend.
